Carnoy Military Cemetery, Somme

At the end of July, 1915, 5th Division, including 9th London (Queen Victoria’s Rifles) of 13th Brigade, moved down to the Somme area and on 10th October they took over the front line trenches at Carnoy. This was a sector where a great deal of mining was taking place by both sides and on 25th October a number of men from 9th London were working with the Royal Engineers when a German mine exploded, killing three of them, including Walter Orpet.
